#2. Documentaries and movies on Art
List of things to watch: Recommendations by Prof Anunaya Chaubey
Hello folks!
Welcome back to our newsletter from the Young India Fellowship (YIF) at Ashoka University. Created by the Learning & Engagement Committee of the YIF2024 batch, this space dives deep into the fellowship experience.
We plan to share:
Curated content -- articles, videos, podcasts, etc., that explores the topics touched upon by professors during the classes.
We also plan to publish articles, recommendations and tips written by fellows.
Now let’s dive into the second edition!
As part of the Art Appreciation Course by Prof Anunaya Chaubey, we watched the movie Woman in Gold, a 2015 biographical drama film directed by Simon Curtis, starring Helen Mirren and Ryan Reynolds.
Here’s the storyline in a nutshell as per Wikipedia:
The movie tells the true story of Maria Altmann, an elderly Jewish refugee residing in Cheviot Hills, Los Angeles. Alongside her young lawyer, Randy Schoenberg, she battled the Austrian government for nearly ten years to recover Gustav Klimt's famous painting of her aunt, Adele Bloch-Bauer. The painting, Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I, had been stolen by the Nazis from her family in Vienna just before World War II. Altmann's legal journey took her all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, which issued a decision in the case Republic of Austria v. Altmann in 2004.
